Master Programme in English Language
For admission to the masters programme a Bachelor or equivalent academic degree
is required. For prospective students with a bachelor not in the social
sciences a selected number of additional courses in theory and methods
may be prescribed.
Proof of knowledge of English:
Austrian
Maturazeugnis (8 years English as first language, Befriedigend or
better) or internet-based TOEFL test (min. score of 85 with min. 20 in
writing) or an equivalent language certificate
Aufbau
The master programme which includes 120 ECTS-Points is structured in two strands, which correspond with its main didactic aims.
The first is devoted to teaching students the basic theoretical and methodological approaches
to the interfaces of science, technology and society as well as to
guiding them to develop in-depth knowledge on selected research
specialisations within this field.
In the second strand students are trained in the skills they will need to develop and apply this knowledge in the academic field and beyond.
In the third and fourth semester, students write a master thesis
on a topic developed in the context of their chosen research
specialisations. Guidance and feedback is offered in the individual
interaction with the thesis supervisor as well as in the context of
practice-oriented thesis seminars.
The Master thesis can be written in English or German.

Qualifikationsprofil
The goal of this master‘s programme is to prepare students to think
analytically and critically and to investigate and understand the
complex interactions between various scientific fields, technologies
and society.
Students will develop the skills necessary to
identify problems and to find adequate ways to investigate them. This
implies that they will be able to conceptualise research questions and
to address them using methods of social science research. Their
academic training will enable them to successfully integrate empirical
work and theoretical reflection. Further, project development and
management will be an important focus of teaching.
